Rihanna: Victorious in Topshop Lawsuit

She can celebrate a victory today as Rihanna learned the result of her lawsuit against London retailer Topshop.

The ?What?s My Name? singer sued the clothing store after it used her face on a t-shirt without her permission, making a profit and calling it the ?Rihanna Tank.?

According to the BBC, High Court Judge Justice Birss declared that a "substantial number" of consumers were likely duped into purchasing the shirt because of a "false belief" that the 25-year-old singer had endorsed the garment.

After Rihanna?s lawyers claimed the shirts were deceptive, a judge agreed and added that the sales were damaging to her "goodwill" and had a negative effect on her reputation in the "fashion sphere."

In turn, the judge added that there is ?no such thing as a general right by a famous person to control the reproduction of their image."

"The taking of the photograph is not suggested to have breached Rihanna's privacy," Birss explained. "The mere sale by a trader of a T-shirt bearing an image of a famous person is not an act of passing off. However I find that Topshop's sale of this T-shirt was an act of passing off."
