Britney Spears Has 'Crazy' Cameo On will.i.am's Album?

Black Eyed Peas mastermind teases a collabo with the pop princess on #willpower, set for 2012 release.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>In a sea of A-list contributions for will.i.am's forthcoming solo album, the Black Eyed Peas mastermind recently dropped one name that will really get pop fans excited. Speaking with <a href="http://www.capitalfm.com/artists/william/news/britney-spears-alicia-keys-new-album/" target="_blank">Capital FM</a>, will teased that his <i>Femme Fatale</i> collaborator Britney Spears will make an appearance on the album, dubbed <i>#willpower.</i> </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Hits The Studio With will.i.am" id="vid:638813" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>"I have a song with Alicia Keys &#8212; me, Alicia and Swedish House Mafia. I have a song with the Beats, which is pretty grand. Me and Shakira have been trying to finish the stuff we started, and me and Britney is really crazy," he said. "So we got a song with me, LMFAO and Eva Simons, a song with me and Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz &#8212; I got a whole other bunch of collaborations." </P><P> </P><P>Spears and will.i.am last worked together on "Big Fat Bass," a spacey, grinding party tune complete with clapping noises and some rapping from will himself. Their recording session was featured on the MTV special <a href="/news/articles/1660830/britney-spears-femme-fatale-previews.jhtml">"I Am the Femme Fatale."</a> There's been no word yet from will's camp about the song and whether this is a new track or if he will be including "Big Fat Bass" on the album. </P><P> </P><P>The rapper/producer's love for Brit is hardly anything new: He <a href="/news/articles/1662289/britney-spears-will-i-am-big-fat-bass.jhtml">gushed to MTV News about the pop princess</a> months after they recorded together. "[I discovered] her love for music. I never seen anyone, like, come alive, full of excitement and giggling and laughing behind the mic," will recalled to MTV News. "She was like a little kid when she was recording the song, and it just brought the whole atmosphere, it changed the whole atmosphere when someone really loves music. So it was great working with her." </P><P> </P><P>His latest single, "T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)," featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger, dropped late last year. <i>#willpower,</i> which also features "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger, will be released later this year. </P><P> </P><P><i>What are you expecting from will and Brit's collabo? Let us know in the comments!</i></p>

Will Black Keys Team Up With Ke$ha? First They Want Jim Nabors

The duo sat down with MTV News in Berlin to discuss a pair of unlikely collaborations.
By James Montgomery

<P>Theirs is a relationship that has spanned time and Twitter, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/77286418598211584" target="_blank">seafood</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/157523381602889728" target="_blank">shaving</a>, but over the years, the unlikely bond between the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">Black Keys</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/id_3213641/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> has grown to become something <i>more</i>: a genuine friendship, marked with the occasional trespassing charge. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Would The Black Keys Ever Collaborate With Ke$ha?" id="vid:731631.id:1678505" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>"We're friends with her, we've known her since way before she was famous, before she was even a singer, I guess," Keys drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. "When she was 16 years old, she used to sneak into our shows. We kind of became friends with her by kicking her out of our backstage room, over and over again. She actually has snuck into shows in L.A., San Diego, Coachella ..." </P><P> </P><P>"She snuck in and [got] kicked out of one show, like, <i>five</i> times," frontman Dan Auerbach added. "[She] snuck in through the kitchen. I don't know if she's such a big fan; she just likes breaking the rules." </P><P> </P><P>So, when MTV News sat down with the 'Keys in Berlin during the premiere of their <a href="/news/articles/1678662/black-keys-gold-on-the-ceiling-music-video.jhtml">"Gold on the Ceiling"</a> video, we had to ask if their friendship with Ke$ha would take the next step: an actual musical collaboration. It's not all that far-fetched, considering both Ke$h and Auerbach live in Nashville ("I see her every once in a while flying by in her T-Top [convertible]," Auerbach laughed), and recently, the glittery one has logged studio time with <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/160846424609787906" target="_blank">the Flaming Lips</a>. So, could we see a team-up on the next Black Keys album? </P><P> </P><P>"I guess, I don't know," Carney said. "We don't really do that many collaborations, really." </P><P> </P><P>OK, so if a Ke$ha collabo isn't in the cards, just who would the 'Keys like to work with next? Well, as it turns out, they've got their eyes set on landing a very big star for the next record ... even if they mistakenly believe he's deceased. </P><P> </P><P>"We both want to work with Jim Nabors very badly, but apparently he's not with us anymore," Carney said. </P><P>Oh, <a href="http://www.jimnabors.com/" target="_blank">but he is.</a> Which means that, much like Nabors, the dream is alive. The Ke$ha collabo? Eh, probably not so much. </P><P> </P><P><i>Should the Black Keys hit the studio with Ke$ha? Leave your comment below!</i></p>

Justin Bieber Ripe For Spoofing, 'Stevie TV' Star Says

'Guys are like, 'I don't know what it is, but you're really hot,' comedian Stevie Ryan says of playing the teen superstar on VH1 show.
By Christina Garibaldi

<P>Stevie Ryan may make fun of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> on her new VH1 show <a href="http://www.vh1.com/shows/stevie_tv/series.jhtml" target="_blank">"Stevie TV,"</a> but the actress and the pop star actually have something cool in common: They were both discovered on YouTube. </P><P> </P><P>Ryan began her career impersonating celebrities and creating her own characters on her YouTube <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/stevieryan" target="_blank">channel</a> and instantly became an Internet star. Now the 26-year-old comedian gets to do her routines on VH1, portraying some of today's biggest celebs and reality TV stars. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:752244/cp~vid%3D752244%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A752244" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>"It's just a female's perspective on pop culture, really, at least that's the way I think about it," Ryan told MTV News on Tuesday. "It's really just kind of making fun of pop culture, what's happening in it, just making fun of these celebrities that are rewarded for bad behavior." </P><P> </P><P>So far on "Stevie TV," Ryan has created a music video that mocks <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a>'s "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)," gotten into character as <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> and done some cross-dressing to get into one of her favorite roles, Justin Bieber. </P><P> </P><P>Ryan explained that Bieber has been the most fun to play "because I always tell everybody how guys and girls always like me when I'm Justin Bieber. ... Girls are like, 'You're so cute, like, are you really a <i>girl</i>?' And then guys are like, 'I don't know what it is, but you're really hot.' But I really like playing everybody," she laughed. </P><P> </P><P>And though she may poke fun at celebrities, Ryan said she's really a fan of most of the stars ... except maybe one. </P><P> </P><P>"I just thought, 'What a great way to kind of show that this is what the younger generation is growing up with, that who little girls like, is Kim Kardashian,' " Ryan said. "It's just observing these weird behaviors and finding a place for them that makes sense because you can always make fun of Kim Kardashian &#8212; she has a big butt, she made a sex tape &#8212; but at the same time you have to step back and look at the big picture; people are actually wanting to be like this." </P><P> </P><P>As for future episodes, Ryan really wants to impersonate a certain Young Money rapper. "I would like to do <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/minaj__nicki/artist.jhtml">Nicki Minaj,"</a> Ryan revealed. "There's nothing that I want to make fun of about her, because I'm obsessed with her and I really, really love her." </P><P> </P><P>Asked if she's gotten any backlash yet for the sometimes harsh jokes on her show, Ryan said she hasn't, but she's ready if it comes her way. </P><P> </P><P>"It hasn't happened before and I'd give a flying f--- about what any of them have to say," Ryan said. "Because I'm just doing my job just like they are and so whatever, if anyone has anything to say, bring it!" </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.vh1.com/shows/stevie_tv/series.jhtml" target="_blank">"Stevie TV"</a> airs Sundays at 11 p.m. ET on VH1. </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of "Stevie TV"? Nas To Take On Uncle Sam On Life Is Good

'My side of the story is on the record,' MC tells 'RapFix Live' of his multimillion-dollar tax woes.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Nas on "RapFix Live"
Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News

If you want to know Nas' take on his multimillion-dollar tax woes, then you'll have to buy his new album. In February, TMZ reported that Queensbridge MC owes more than $6 million in back taxes, and now the Internal Revenue Service plans to garnish wages earned from his music publishing until things are even Steven.

Ever the wordsmith, Nas got creative with his "no comment" comment when he appeared on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. "My side of the story is on the record and I speak about it on the record," he said of how he plans to address his tax troubles on his upcoming Life Is Good LP.

Speaking of his 10th solo album, God's Son told Sway that the LP's title is evolving. "The record is starting to take on a whole different new thing and it's just bigger than Life Is Good now," he explained. "Yeah, life is good, but there's so much information I think that's important that I get out there that I think the title is becoming bigger."

And if the album's first two singles are any indication, Life is Good is anything but happy-go-lucky. "Nasty," the LP's first single, which the rapper released in 2011, is a sonic throwback to the gritty, New York-style rap of the 1990s. Nas' latest single, "The Don," is also reminiscent of a different era of rap. The Heavy D and Salaam Remi-produced track samples reggae star Super Cat and finds Nas rapping about his days hustling in the street and his hip-hop beginnings.

Nas hasn't announced a release date for Life is Good yet, but it's hard to imagine that he'd have anything nice to say toward Uncle Sam.

What are you hoping to hear from Nas on Life Is Good? Leave your comment below!

No hay más Led Zeppelin

By

American Idols Sing Their Idols: Our Song Picks

MTV's Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery hope the top nine will buck convention and show their age — in a good way.
By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery

Jessica Sanchez on "American Idol"
Photo: Fox

So far this season, the finalists on "American Idol" haven't done a great job when it comes to song selection. Whether it's rescuing an obscure hair-metal tune by White Lion from history's trash heap or stupidly picking the same Adele song in the same week, these kids don't seem to have the magic touch.

That's why this week's theme — songs from their idols — is so pregnant with promise. Finally, an opportunity for Heejun, Colton, Jessica, Hollie and the gang to break out of their predictable been-there-done-that-downloaded the-iTunes-single-and-already-deleted-it ballad ghetto. Show producer Nigel Lythgoe has already let slip on Twitter that we can expect to hear "Beyonce, Mariah, Miranda, Lifehouse, Daughtry, Led Zeppelin." Zzzzzzzzzzz.

So we know it's already set in stone and nobody listens to us anyway (though they totally should), but here is what we would like to hear the top nine sing this week:

Colton Dixon
The Warped Tour wannabe has already proven his terrible taste in tunes (White Lion, Switchfoot), and we can only assume he's going to move into the Lifehouse this week. We get the piano thing, but Colton needs to prove his rock bona fides with something uptempo and (relatively) contemporary, since he's the only guy who has a "look" to speak of. How about the White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl"? Or Radiohead's "Creep"? — Gil Kaufman

Word on the street — or the Internet — is that he's going to do a Lifehouse song, which, OK, seems perfectly fitting (anyone who's read my "Idol" report cards knows how I feel about this guy). But since we're swinging for the fences here, I'm going to suggest C.Dix go outside his comfort zone and take on Death Cab for Cutie's "I'll Follow You Into the Dark." It's plenty somber, and it plays directly to his strengths: namely, being kinda wussy and connecting on a deeply soulful plane with his female fans. Imagine the squeals when he keens "Love of mine ... " Or, shoot, maybe he goes super current and does Fun.'s "We Are Young"? — James Montgomery

Hollie Cavanagh
We get it, Hollie, you are the tiny queen of the gigantic ballad. But what you haven't done yet is show us some personality. Here's your chance. Go with an uptempo song that's fun but isn't by a singer known just for their soaring vocals. Perhaps Katy Perry's "Firework"? — Kaufman

We know she can sing. We also know that she relies w-a-a-y too heavily on torchy, big-time ballads as a result. So this week, I'm hoping she changes things up a bit, shows some personality and covers a super-pop tune like Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" or "Part of Me." Or maybe she splits the difference and does Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"? She needs to have fun up there, because I get the creeping suspicion that voters might be getting bored with her, which could mean she's getting dangerously close to elimination. And that would be a shame. — Montgomery

DeAndre Brackensick
What do you do with this guy? He's got the falsetto and, apparently, a look that the ladies love, but he's low on stagecraft and just never seems comfortable in his own skin. There may be no better song for him to tackle than Maxwell's cloud-chasing falsetto ballad "Prettywings." It makes him sound now and it's so in his ballpark, it's sick. — Kaufman

Still waiting on him to have his breakthrough moment (though his hair remains a constant highlight each and every week), and since this week's theme is apparently "Idols" — and since J.Lo keeps dropping references to it — I'm just going to assume the inevitable: He's doing a Bob Marley song. But which should he choose? "Three Little Birds" would showcase both his voice and his impressive bobbing skills, though how amazing would it be if he switched things up and did Pete Tosh's "Legalize It"? Steven Tyler would probably leap onstage and sing it with him. — Montgomery

Phillip Phillips
Phil's problem is he's kind of no fun. He won't listen to Tommy or Jimmy about clothes or music, and he kind of just turns every song into a Dave Matthews grumble. I could go one of two ways with this guy: either a hushed, not growly ballad by Bon Iver like the Grammy bait "Holocene," or something fun and light like Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours," which everyone loves! — Kaufman

Another, uh, favorite of mine (loved what he did on "Movin' Out," especially the part where he turned it into an ungodly growl-fest ... ), and if you think he's not doing Dave Matthews tonight, well, then you've never watched his feet while he plays. All kidding aside, I'm hoping he goes outside the box, maybe does Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" or Jeff Buckley's "Grace." Neither of those things will actually happen, of course, and according to Nigel Lythgoe's Twitter account, someone's doing Daughtry, so it'll probably be him. It's definitely in his, uh, zone. So I'll say he does "What About Now." — Montgomery

Heejun Han
Best-case scenario is Hee Han comes out and does a "Weird" Al Yankovic song and just gets it over with. But if the "funny" finalist insists on hanging around, he also needs to break out of ballad jail and go for something a bit faster, but not as jokey as his Billy Joel performance. My pick: Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends." — Kaufman

I was going to suggest he do the "Nyan Cat" song, since it's nearly as annoying as he is. But since that seems like a longshot at best (though, with Heejun, you never know), and given the buttery loverman shtick he keeps foisting down our throats each week, I'm thinking he goes R&B. Perhaps Usher's "U Got It Bad"? D'Angelo's "Untitled (How Does It Feel)"? Or maybe he goes into full-on Operation Shutdown mode and just cover's Beck's "Sexx Laws"? Anything to speed up his inevitable exit. — Montgomery

Skylar Laine
It's hard being the only country girl. While the temptation is to break out of that gilded cage, one way spunky Laine can mix it up is by choosing a new classic by an old star. What about the Jack White-produced "Van Lear Rose" by Loretta Lynn done in a bluesy/jazzy style? — Kaufman

Gee, I wonder if she'll do a country tune? Lythgoe hinted on Twitter that someone's doing a Miranda Lambert song, so I'll go out a limb and suggest it'll be her. Which means get ready for a version of "The House That Built Me," y'all! Other, less inevitable suggestions? Since she got so many Reba comparisons, perhaps "You Lie" or "What If," or a classy, brassy take on anything from the Patsy Cline songbook ("Crazy"? "I Fall to Pieces"?). — Montgomery

Joshua Ledet
How Ledet went from being one of the front-runners to a potential also-ran is a mystery to me, but needless to say, he needs to bring it this week. We know he can do church, but can he do something a bit more pop? I say have some fun and do R. Kelly's "Happy People." It's mostly midtempo, but Josh could surely throw some fire into the middle to make it ignite and prove again that he can handle modern music. — Kaufman

What to do with Josh? He can sing practically anything, though after a rough couple of weeks, perhaps he needs to get back to basics: Gospel. Maybe he does Kirk Franklin's "Looking for You"? If he's looking for something a little more, uh, contemporary, does he dare bring the "Mantasia" thing full-circle and do the fabulous Fantasia's "I Believe" or "When I See U"? — Montgomery

Jessica Sanchez
We get it: The tiny girl can blow the roof off the dump. Ballads? Check. After her disastrous "Turn the Beat Around," J.Sanch needs to show us she can do dance floor as well as prom night. It's gotta be Rihanna, and I give her a choice: "Only Girl (In the World)," or "We Found Love." — Kaufman

She's doing Beyoncé. There can be no doubt about this. But does she tackle the big, ballad-y B of "If I Were a Boy" or "Halo"? Or is this the week she decides to change it up a bit and do the down-and-dirty crazy B of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" or "Love on Top"? I'm thinking she plays it safe — since, at this point, she's so far ahead of the rest of the field she's practically lapping them — and goes with "Halo." And, yes, it will be fantastic. — Montgomery

Elise Testone
She's been battered, sent to the bottom three and come back swinging. Sound like anyone we know? Pink, "Trouble." 'Nuff said. — Kaufman

After last-week's Lazarus-like comeback, she's found her comfort zone, which means we can expect something big and boozy from her this week. Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" or "Me and Bobby McGee"? Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me"? Or maybe she switches it up and does the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun"? If she wants to get more current, perhaps Adele, or Pink? Actually, Lady Gaga's "Yoü and I" would work well. Either way, she's playing with house money at this point. — Montgomery

Melissa McCarthy Covers Ladies' Home Journal May 2012

With the second season finale of her show "Mike & Molly" just upon us, Melissa McCarthy added to her promotions by landing the cover of the May 2012 issue of Ladies' Home Journal.

The 41-year-old Illinois native showed off her endearing smile for the Brigitte Lacombe shot front page while dishing to the magazine about everything from what makes her nervous to meeting her husband.

Highlights from Miss McCarthy's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Ladies' Home Journal!

On what makes her nervous:
"A still camera ? you know, just being myself. What am I supposed to do? Left to my own devices I look like this [she makes an insane frozen Cheshire cat grin], like the worst grade school photo ever. It's so much easier for me to play a character."

On how she got into comedy:
"It wasn't exactly my goal. One day Brian and I were standing in line at the grocery store and he saw an ad in the Village Voice for an open mic at a comedy club and said, 'You're going to do standup.'"

On meeting her husband:
"Ben and I have been married seven years, but together for 12. He was one of my best friends. When we were at the Groundlings we'd all go out after a show and have a couple of beers. When other people would start to leave Ben and I would stay saying, 'I'm going to have just one more beer.' It was like we risked becoming raging alcoholics just to finally be like, 'I really like you.'"

Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Teaser Goes Hard

The 13-second preview of Mike Posner-produced track shows off an edgier side of Bieber.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Is it killing you that you have to wait until Monday to hear what <a href="/news/articles/1680882/justin-bieber-boyfriend-single-buzz.jhtml">"Boyfriend" sounds</a> like? Well, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> feels your pain and decided to release a teaser for the lead single off his <a href="/news/articles/1680373/justin-bieber-believe-album.jhtml">album, <i>Believe.</i></a> </P><P> </P><P>The 13-second, blink-and-you-might-miss-it tease is spare in terms of instruments, just bleeps and thumps, no singing or rapping. But it does play up Bieber's love for hip-hop; as it nears the end of the tease, a drum line-style beat kicks in. Come Monday, of course, the whole song will drop for Beliebers' listening pleasure. </P><P> </P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744691/cp~id%3D1680192%26vid%3D744688%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744688" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> </P><P> </P><P>The video teaser also includes footage of Bieber in the studio, recording "Boyfriend," which was co-written and co-produced by Mike Posner. The clip premiered on Justin's <a href="http://www.justinbiebermusic.com/boyfriend" target="_blank">website</a> late Thursday night. </P><P> </P><P>"This record is different in a very good way," said producer/writer Mason Levy, who also worked on the song. "Definitely edgier, it's more grown-up, it's more developed and it's sexier. It's just like really dope. It's gonna definitely surprise people. People aren't really expecting that. They're going to like it." </P><P> </P><P>It's clear from the teaser that <a href="/news/articles/1681595/justin-bieber-boyfriend.jhtml">Bieber is using</a> influences from urban music and that he's looking to grow up sonically. The music in the new clip also seems to pay homage to Justin Timberlake, and even Chris Brown. Bieber has confirmed that he raps on the song. </P><P> </P><P>"It's more just the verses [that he's rapping on], and the rest he's singing," Levy told MTV News. "It's dope. It's hip-hop, but with great acoustic R&B, pop guitar with very hip-hop, clubby drums and really dope Justin Timberlake-y melodies." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of "Boyfriend" so far? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.
By James Montgomery with MTV News staff

<P>"I'm bewildered," <a href="/music/artist/plant_robert/artist.jhtml">Robert Plant</a> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <a href="/music/artist/krauss_alison/artist.jhtml">Alison Krauss</a> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday." </P><P> </P><P>He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because <i>Raising Sand,</i> which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.</p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history. </P><P> </P><P>Really, she's the key to <i>Sand</i>'s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music &#8212; so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, <i>Sand</i> was released. </P><P> </P><P>And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain. </P><P> </P><P>And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on <i>Sand.</i> His arrangements are sparse &#8212; giving the two voices ample room to breathe &#8212; yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified. </P><P> </P><P>To date, <i>Sand</i> has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year &#8212; "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. </P><P> </P><P>One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album. </P><P> </P><P>"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" <i>New York Times</i> music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really <i>good</i> record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards." </P><P></p>

Adele Notches Best Sales Year Since Usher's Confessions

In 2011, 21 moved more than 5.6 million copies in the U.S.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>The music industry has been stuck in a rut for nearly a decade. But every once in a while, it still manages to produce one of those unstoppable hit albums that give everyone that good old feeling. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Rolling in the Deep" id="vid:604336" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>This year's model is <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a>'s <I>21</I>, which not only sold more copies than any other album in the U.S. in 2011 (more than 5.6 million to date), but which has also moved the most units of any artist since 2004. According to a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/27/us-adele-idUSTRE7BQ10V20111227" target="_blank"><I>Reuters</I> report</a>, those gaudy figures (which top 15 million worldwide) make the British songbird the first artist to cross the 5 million mark in one year since Usher did it with his fourth studio album, <I>Confessions</I>, which sold 7.9 million units more than seven years ago. </P><P> </P><P>And to think she did it by releasing just two mega singles, <a href="/news/articles/1675976/adele-rolling-in-the-deep-best-song-2011.jhtml">"Rolling in the Deep"</a> and "Someone Like You," and barely touring North America due to <a href="/news/articles/1674453/adele-throat-surgery-recovery.jhtml">recurring vocal issues.</a>&#8232; </P><P> </P><P>There have been other big hits along the way to Adele's mark, including Eminem selling more than 3.4 million copies of his comeback <I>Recovery</I> album last year and Taylor Swift taking the honors in 2009 with <I>Fearless</I>, which sold 3.2 million copies. But none have come as close to Usher's mark in the interim. </P><P> </P><P>There doesn't seem to be any chance Adele will be surpassed by the end of the year: The closest contenders are Lady Gaga's <I>Born This Way</I> (2.08 million) and Michael Bubl&#233;'s <I>Christmas</I> (2.4 million). The other good news is that overall music sales are expected to be up slightly (3 percent) by the end of this year, marking the first time that's happened since 2004.</p>

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off <MTVNLINK type="url" id="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</MTVNLINK>'s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again." </P><P> </P><P>That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on <a href="/news/articles/1610708/adam-allison-shine-on-idol-rock-night.jhtml">"American Idol" rock night</a> Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on <I>Rolling Stone</i> magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004. </P><P> </P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtvmusic.com:84215" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="dist=http://www.mtvmusic.com" allowFullScreen="true" AllowScriptAccess="always"></embed></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album <I>Led Zeppelin II.</i> Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon. </P><P> </P><P>For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997. </P><P> </P><P>Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction. </P><P> </P><P><b>Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' <a href="/news/articles/1486475/mtv-news-american-idol.jhtml">"American Idol" page</a>, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.</b></p>
